Tom Paton 

Tom Paton cut his teeth in filmmaking back in his hometown of Wellington. He was bitten by the 48Hours bug in 2006 and never looked back!

2024 is his 10th year in the role of regional manager for the Gisborne/Napier region.

It comes with a welcome challenge as he is takes on the new role of Bay of Plenty regional manager.

He is honoured to bring his filmmaking experience and expertise to two thriving filmmaking communities, he is ready to facilitate filmmaking success in these regions.

Judges

Jason Canovas

 

Jason Canovas was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Achievement in Sound Editing for his work on The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.

He is known for his frequent collaborations with director Peter Jackson.

Jason is recognised for his work on The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Mortal Engines (2018), WorldWar Z (2013), The Adventures of Tintin (2011), Boy (2010), District 9 (2009), The Lovely Bones (2009), and Ghost Dog (1999), Way of the Bee (2010) among other titles.

Darren Maynard

 

Gisborne-born Darren Maynard has worked on countless international and New Zealand productions.

He’s worked for Warner Brothers’ Sound Department and other top facilities such as King Soundworks, Formosa Group, and Park Road Post.

Notable credits include The Tax Collector (2020), Joker (2019), Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (Video Game, 2019), and Dynasty.

Mike Hedges

 

Audio engineer Michael Hedges has won Academy Awards for his work on Peter Jackson blockbusters King Kong and The Return of the King. And has most recently been nominated for an Oscar and a BAFTA for best sound on Avatar: The Way of Water. As well as winning the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Nonfiction or Reality Program (Single or Multi-Camera) for The Beatles: Get Back

After starting in state television, Hedges went on to establish a reputation for his skills as a re-recording mixer, combining the many elements that make up a soundtrack. Aside from multiple movies featuring hobbits, he has also worked on Hunt for the Wilderpeople, What We Do in the ShadowsDistrict 9, and Peter Jackson’s earlier films Heavenly Creatures and Braindead.

His extensive credits list is as long as your arm and it also includes Kiwi classics Once Were WarriorsBoy and The World's Fastest Indian

Bronwyn Turei

 

Ngati Porou, Gisborne born, Auckland based Actress, Singer/Songwriter Bronwyn was a Gisborne rising star straight out of GGHS. She was 1 out of 18 students chosen from
an applicant pool of 160 to attend Unitech School of Performing Arts, where she took a trip to London to study Shakespeare at The Globe Theatre. She formed a Girls rock band called Pepto. They performed in the Rock Quest 1999, 2000 and 2001. Bronwyn won best lyric songwriter all three years, came runner up in Gisborne region in 2000, the same year they recorded “Who’s laughing now?” She was head Prefect in 2001.


Bronwyn made her debut at TVNZ on air in 2009-2012 as Cody Latimer in Go Girls. She has performed in various theatre productions and appearances in TVNZ on air such as “The Brokenwood Mysteries and recently starred as a supporting actress in the movie “The Tender Trap,” which aired March 2021. Bronwyn has been in five 48Hours, four in which she was an actress and one where she took on the multitasking roll of wardrobe, props, set design and makeup.

Josh O'Neill

 

Accredited Production Designer Josh O’Neill has worked on a variety of projects including This Town (2020), Hinekura (2019), and Wellington Paranormal (2019), to name a few. 

He has also won the 48Hours Gisborne Regional Finals 5 times!

Esther Stephens

 

Auckland born Actress/singer/songwriter and Best Actress nominee.
Esther was bound for great things straight out of school. She formed a band at 12yrs old. Did a three-year course at Unitec Performing and screen arts. During this time, she was doing theatre, playing in a nine piece band and living abroad.


Esther made her debut on TVNZ on Air in 2009 where she played Olivia Duff in Go Girls. She has made various appearance in shows such as “Underbelly NZ – Land of the Long White Cloud” 2011 and “When We Go To War” 2015.


In 2015, Esther went on to become a household name again in one of NZ’s favorite series,
“Westside” as the legendary Ngaire Munroe. Which ran for three seasons. A prequel to “Outrageous Fortune”.

Tee Wells

 

Tee Wells is a Screen Producer and Director with extensive experience in television and radio broadcasting. Tee has worked across the Asia/Pacific region in digital media and TV broadcasting in countries such as Cambodia, Australia and the Cook Islands.

Tee is Producer of the television docu-series 'Manalagi' which will feature on multiple digital platforms such as TVNZ's Tagata Pasifika, Coconet.TV and Whakaata Māori later this year, and is currently being pitched to feature on Netflix. Accolades include producing the award-winning grassroots documentary film 'LGBTQI Aotearoa: Then and Now', which was made by Qmunity Youth Gisborne in 2016. It took best film award at the Wairoa Film Festival in 2017. Tee is the Film Office Executive for Screen Tairāwhiti which is the Regional Film Office for Tairāwhiti since 2021.
