The Black Dog
The lead actress was pretty solid in her performance, but it felt a little too art house / pretentious for my taste. This was one of two "loosing a baby" films in this heat and that theme always makes me uncomfortable, not because of the subject matter, more because it feels a little forced in trying to invoke a reaction. I will say however, it didn't get the usual "serious film giggles" that this sort of short normally invokes in this competition so the audience was gripped at some level.
Who Gets To Go?
Great example of a team having a blast, love these type of 48 hour films. Decent leads, nice twist. Good film to start off a heat and get everyone into it.
Paralysis
We've never had horror, but we've thought about what we'd do, I'd like to hope we'd have the balls to do something like Paralysis. Hybrid are one of the more reliable teams in the competitions and this was no exception. Hats off for nailing Horror. It was a real horror, not a jokey or overly gory or even jumpy short, it got under my skin and stayed there! Nailed it. Top work team.
The Institute
Very cool little action flick, with all the action cliches (NOT A BAD THING!) - a few sound problems made me realize that "yes, this was all done in 48 hours!" The only thing that stopped this from scoring higher in my opinion was the story didn't really go anywhere. Saying that I'd love to see this back online with all the added polish that can't be finished in the competitions time frame, and a more conclusive 3rd act. Well done guys.
Revenge Unlimited
A lot of reviews about this films originality, revenge names and ending.....hmm..looks familiar to me, I suppose it's a form of flattery, but pretty shameless rip off. http://www.v48hours.co.nz/screening-room/2009/auckland/the-revenger/

BROKEN SILENCE
It's been said many times before...WHY HAVE THESE GUYS NOT BEEN GIVEN FUNDING TO DO A FEATURE YET??!!! Another brilliant film from one of the most consistent teams in 48 hours. A real tough act to follow!
Query
My attention wavered at some point in this so I've no idea how it finished, apart from an uncomfortable lesbian moment in a lift. The tone was off, felt like one person in the group thought it was a comedy while everyone else went for drama. It made me smile as I could see it was the teams first attempt, and most of the cast looked like they were wearing their parents clothes. It's also painfully obvious that Critic1 is a member of this group ;-)

Where Do The Children Play?
Great stuff, the little glimpse of a dirty hand in the soil was freaky and felt like a tip of the iceberg of a bigger story, which was really nicely done as it kept playing in my head for days. Well done.
Void
I'd be REALLY interested to see what other teams did with this genre! I actually thought the lead may have been deaf, as the soundtrack was very disorientating (in a good way) and that would add a level to the film and plot... but she wasn't.
Speak to Me
The idea felt familiar, but this was a great short and could probably stand up outside the competition. Really solid leads, was grounded and didn't venture into ridiculous, which it could very well have.

Guinea Pig Funeral
When this started I rolled my eyes and thought "Great some film students loving Wes Anderson!" It was typically 48 hours basic, and the scene were he could hear voices felt like filler... BUT the charm and home made effort that went into the (SPOILER) digging to Hell scene and then everything that followed turned my whole impression of the film around. The Guinea Pig and Satan stole the show, their look and performance made the whole film. Inspired.
