Illusion of Refuge
This team were creative with their characters and there was a positively loony tone to some of the conversations. I really think One shot is overrated as a "fantastic" genre for story due to a misconception that edit cuts are 'supposed' constraints so well done to this team. A story involving a deaf mute turning up at a shelter and being tasked with finding something someone had lost.. Proceed through the shelter and all sorts of zany characters with insipid monologues and sheltered song. I think this one just missed one more little shift which would have propelled the plot more. Apart from that the set was rad and the characters were comfortably distinct from the actors playing them which helped you focus on the narrative from point one. Cool
Meatballs
This film was crisp in terms of production value (although girlfriend didnt quite grasp the subtelty). Reveal that the people who are "missing" from the initial newspaper estab are in fact murdered victims of the creepy, narcisstic (very patrick bateman) protaganist who delusionally enjoys high tea / dinner with them. I had to cover my daughters eyes during the reveal as the static cuts made an impact. Im not sure whether the differences in exposure were due to the narrative tone and to differentiate between life and death but i would like to watch this a few more times to understand
Parallel Lines
That same alarm tone I've heard many a time. A film that really restored itself after an innocuous first act. I could see from the main action piece with the robbery that this team did well with location, probably working with 2 - 4 crew some doubling as actors. Atfter building some positive momentum through the second act the final payoff was well timed however I feel the beginning could have been further compressed without compromising any char. development. A good short
Morgan is a Walrus
Accent kept changing for our main walrus but it was breezy, consistent and light hearted. A couple of films in this heat suffered from sound issues but this wasn't one of them. I love crazy concepts and in this tale of a "walrus" seeking continued domestic bliss, we saw some nice dialogue and solid production. A little dragging out of the concept but one of daughters top films of the heat
25 Minutes
Anytime you see a bearded swashbuckling pirate confront a ninja in the downstairs of a IVF clinic foyer, you know that your in for something. Some nice comedic touches throughout led itself more towards a comedy however a dashing car scene and the aformentioned pirate ninja battle restored it's faith in Action. some real subtleties in the acting balanced out by a little technical compensation in other areas. Nice upbeat film
Odd Pairs
This was actually a really clever film and you could tell by the timing and pacing which was one of it's strength. I think both actors and actresses all came across really well and you could see this with the male lead and the supporting actress who did what many don't in this comp and presented their characters well without the need for too much developement. Now I know where all my socks are
