Loose End

What a ripper! Loved this one. They did an awesome job taking such a conceptual film and making it sentimental and touching - particularly given the time and budget constraints. I felt that the visual metaphor/imagery tied in (pardon the pun) innately to the story/concept. It’s difficult to create an affective response with allegory, but this team managed to do that with great humor and some broad thematics. Very deftly handled by the director. Great lake indeed!

Lover's Got the Runs

Masters at work here! A fantastic story, it feels like a great anecdote you’d hear at a dinner party. The performance from the lead actress was fantastic. Completely convincing. The camera work is scrumptious and enhanced by a beautiful colour grade. The structure was perfect. The highlight of the film for me was the performance by the Pastor. Their use of profanity was like the climax to a spiritual conflict AND a great punchline. Well done!

S(p)lash

I was hypnotised by this enigma of a film. It was resonant and strangely salient for a film that so tantalisingly dances away from comprehension. The thematic concern of the rising sea levels and humanity’s ability to destroy ourselves was sewn into the film. The documentarian aspects of it fuse with the narrative aspects of it to create an interesting kind of third space. I think it is an exciting thing to create something new or inventive or original so I praise this team. Well done!

Gutted

This movie left me feeling anything but gutted! Great film. Great use of genre. Great lead performance. Great sfx. Great ending. I was thoroughly impressed with this devilishly delightful film. It was squeamish and gleeful at once. Well done to the art/props team for such convincing, comedic and coronary guts! Matter of fact, well done to the whole team’s guts! Very Olivia Rodrigo coded. Particularly the failed proposal - which was an excellent emotional centre to the film. Perfectly played in all its nuances by the star. Bravo!

Monster State

This haunting, heartbreaking film delivered a real punch. Director Julie and the team of creatives that concocted this concept were clever with their manipulation of the audience’s expectations. The twist ending was a subversion that created meaning and introspection. Outstanding performances from the cast that sell the tragedy at the core of their idea. At the grand finals, the director, Julie spoke so eloquently and so beautifully. Her consideration and artistic intention created a powerful project. Well done.

CHICKEN

I loved this movie. I’m very excited by the team that made this project. I’m sure they will make something equally as epic with their winnings. Totally well-deserved. Absolutely brilliant. Creative genius, and there’s no other way to word it. Clearly, there was something spiritual with the sky when you shot your climax. Phenomenal, ephemeral imagery to match an outstanding film. To me, it stood out as the clear victor! Congratulations Nuggets

Zero Mum Game

This was a captivating, funny, and well-executed film. A lot of it hinges on a believable story world and the director/cast were able to convince us of this world of a cutthroat family breakfast. I also thoroughly enjoyed the ending. Great comedic imagery. A woman, unable to stop her premise from being squandered. Humorous (and relatable) stakes and I enjoyed the delineation of gendered restrictions of mothers in a patriarchal society. Could have been a little heavy handed of an idea for comedy, but this film absolutely smashed it. Congratulations

Chef's Kiss

Wonderfully inventive take on the possession film. I was highly impressed with the performance by the lead actor. To lead a film, make it believable, make it hilarious and to do it in multiple languages and with multiple characters is remarkable. He is supported by a fantastic cast-mate and a great script. Well done

The Long Neck Job

Well done on this film. It was so much fun. A right laugh from start to finish. For a heist film, their choice of what would be the loot was hilarious. Perhaps it was a choice made for availability concern, but still felt it had me in fits of uproarious laughter. Excellent comedic tone. Congratulations
