In this animated film a wife convinces her husband (Lionel) to return a watch that belongs to his estranged father. On the journey, Lionel enters a cave and finds an annoying skeleton called Nicky who ends up joining Lionel on his trip. Nicky accidently breaks the watch but convinces Lionel to go see a giant hand who will hopefully lend them a hand! (Boom, boom!) This was a very clever cut-out animation film with many funny moments. The "ball retrieval" scene, for one, was very well timed and had the audience laughing. The voice work was excellent as was the all-round technical effort. The integration of gaming style action worked well and further added to the enjoyment of this entertaining film from this team formally out of Wellington. A real finals possibility. Don't forget there is an iPad on the line!

This is an awesome parody of JRPGs showcasing amazing cutout animation. I found I was laughing most of the way through the film. The story was well written, and voice acting was great too. I particularly liked the use of leaf attack in the FIGHT scene. All of my team-mates had this film in their top 3 films at the heat. Great work! P.S. the Nicky Brick character reminded me of Dem the Skeleton Knight from Breath of Death VII, was that intentional?
An amazing animated masterpiece that touched on a bunch of different genres. I absolutely loved this one. The animation was superbly done in a stylized manner, and it's clear that you guys knew what you were doing. I loved the over-arching theme of parodying classic RPGs. I laughed pretty hard when the skeleton kept asking the guy to retrieve the ball over and over again. Really well-written dialogue and clearly-recorded audio. The 8/16-bit music was superb. I laughed at the watch dropping sequence. I pretty much laughed nonstop through the whole thing. The battle with the father-in-law-to-be was amazing and the spirit of hate leaving him was amazing as well. This is the sort of film I'd share with my friends if I stumbled upon it online. Loved every minute of it. Things to work on: Bigger/faster/better/stronger man, I don't know. You guys rocked it. I eagerly await what you'll do next.
This was a colourful heat all round, what with two puppeted efforts and also this one animated film. As far as I can tell, the general rule for creating effective animation is that if you can’t make it look really really polished, then you head in the exact opposite direction and try for a lo-fi, virtually hand-drawn look and feel (while at the same time maintaing the highest production values). Or perhaps literally hand-drawn, at least in part, as seemed to be the case here. Yet again, voice talent is crucial to making non-real people come alive onscreen, and they didn’t disappoint here. The story is a simply quest to take a watch to a guy’s father-in-law, and it’s heavily and lovingly drenched in the tropes and schtick of oldschool fantasy computer games. Attention to detail in things like the music and the pop-up menus made a big difference, and the ‘side quest’ with the ball and the skeleton in the cave was an hilarious highlight. Given the high and consistent level of stylisation throughout, it’s hard to find much to fault, resulting in an extremely solid piece of entertainment.
