Time and Location

A super hero with the ability to jump back in time appears to freelance his skills out to people for a price. A man in trouble texts in his location and the superhero appears to save him. Cool concept, and it was short and to the point, which is great it didn't drag on like lots of films I've seen in the past, but could have done with a little more something to give it a little more 'meat' Was sort of over by the time you figured out what was going on. A little of the usual actors probably not cast right for their role (eg a little young to play hardened criminals) but some great brooding cinematography and build up through the first half.

Looked pretty slick to start off with, if only it was longer and had more substance. The team here have the skills to create a awesome film, just need an original idea and to hone in on post production! Great work with some of the shots and lighting.

Characters do not necessarily need super powers to be classified as superheroes, and some of the best have not had them at all. Bruce Wayne was an ordinary person - a large empire and a fortune backing him, sure, but a man nonetheless. The antithesis of this can be seen in the likes of Superman - a godly figure capable of moving mountains (or even time, but let's not dwell on planet-spinning-physics too much here). Whichever path you choose to go down when creating this kind of film, of course, there is one quintessential point which always stands out for me. Superheroes are flawed. Even the ones who are least human, where most of their flawed traits comes from, exhibit some weakness, some flaw of character that make them interesting. Superman was un-corruptible, and let's be fair here - a bit of a romantic. Batman was psychologically damaged, no matter which series or film you look at. And modern superhero films (I'm thinking Hancock here, although I try not to think about it too often, truth be told) have taken this to the extreme - entirely flawed superhero tries to make good. There is of course one other point which has always stared blindingly out of the films. Few, if any, ask for their powers, or the responsibility it entails. Sterile Cork Tiles have taken the Superhero genre and put their own spin on it. An empowered superhero who suffers no nobility, or the fight for peace, but obviously a host of other character flaws. A time-travelling super(hero?) freelances his abilities to the highest bidder, rather than the worthiest cause. And why not? We may characterise our heroes as masked figures, fighting for truth and justice all we want, but most of the real ones out there still collect a pay-check after running into that burning building, or facing down an offender. I thoroughly enjoyed SCT's take on this genre, and their film as a whole. It's a shame that they didn't get their submission in for the running, but great to see it up on the big-screen nonetheless. The length of the film was good, not as long and drawn out as some works I've seen (seven minutes is a limit, not a target after-all). Though I find myself agreeing with what other people have written - there could have been more substance to the film. More depth, more insight into the character. Mysterious is fine, great even, but there are other ways to keep the mystique of a character going. The cinematography was good; some of the shots very impressive and notable; the use of lighting was effective; and I'd love to see what the team came up with with a bit more time to devote to the project. Good work guys!

[Disqualified: Late] A man in a world of hurt manages to call on a saviour to rescue him from his predicament. This looked pretty good and had a lot of camera movement that helped present the story, which in itself was a clever concept. I noticed a few punches thrown without any impact sound attached but that is picking holes in an otherwise solid presentation. It was very short though which is OK if your story is told. This had the feeling that more could have been! Really felt for you staring at your screen in hope outside the doors of the DuxLive. Better luck next year!

I really liked this film. It had pretty good polish and some nice editing. The acting was fairly convincing too. It only seemed a little cut short, leaving you hanging without much explanation.

A gritty film with an unlikely superhero. I really liked this film, and you guys totally rocked it on a technical level. Sweet opening dolly shot, sweet dolly shots throughout, great color-grading, great use of light for the night shots, great effects, and great cinematography all-around. Really neat gimmick with the guy going back in time to stop the crimes. A bit brutal with all the head shots, but that seems par for the course with something like this. Disappointing that it was late, as this was an otherwise very strong showing. Things to work on: Get it in on time! (I've turned in two out of the last three late, so I know that pain) Work on making the story about more clear as well, as I didn't understand what the superhero wanted from the hostage (though I kind of liked the "anti-hero" flavor you wove into it). Very nice film. Pressed my buttons pretty doggone well. :-)

One of my favorite films from the heats. Its a pity they were disqualified. Great start and middle which really set the scene. However I found the conclusion to be a bit of a let down.

In terms of structure and themes, this was more of a crime thriller than a superhero movie, but of course its most prominent feature was the presence of a character with special time/space-jumping powers, so that’s good enough. And this guy turns out to be a sort of sell-sword superhero monetising his abilities and using them for personal profit. I really liked the procedural aspect to this film, the way the guy just calmly arrived at the house in the daytime, steadily did the work, always walking slowly, you could tell this was just a standard day-job to him. The whole thing was over pretty quickly, and maybe that was for the best, cos there wasn’t really much more to say about the setup without getting too bogged down in origin-stories or consequences. Some of the logic of what exactly this superpowered hired gun was doing was a little unclear, and if you think about it for a bit you might realise that once you have time-travel involved there would seem to be much easier ways of achieving the desired outcomes. But that’s alright; a slight but stylish production.

Time and location made for a very impressive start to heat 9. Nice shots and editing made for some very good suspense. Over all I enjoyed watching this film as the concept was a good one. This said I felt that what I watched was the first scene of a bigger story. So ultimately It didn’t play out like a short film. the film didnt really live up to the potential of the concept. "a dark gun-for-hire superhero" A very solid entry, I look forward to your future efforts.

Technically good and an interesting spin on the superhero genre. That said however nothing made this film stand out for me.
