Very cool. Loved the original music, fitted perfectly to all the action. I liked the different venue use and the storyline. Nice title

Priests and churches sure seem to be popular this year. We get told/shown the story of a camera documenting someone having a fairly wild weekend. How they came to acquire said camera however provides a good story point. It must be a bit frustrating to clearly have some quality HD gear and then get this genre, as the time off the low budget camera was fairly crisp indeed on screen. Anyway lipstick on the forehead, seduction at a poolhall, the aftermath of a party and confessions at a church all get good screen time.

loved the venues, overall looked very professional, all came clear in end re plot. great idea, also loved the music :)

Wow, what a way to start the screening! A serious mind bender, which left me putting all the pieces together... and from the response of the audience (reserved silence), I think it wasn't just me! The best production values of the night, and with just a touch more volume I think untouchable (production wise) Not sure about Stealpotato's rating 6/10 (the most prolific reviewer! Who are you anyway??) considering SP, you also scored Fresh Leaf, Rollover and Full-night the same... (yeah I notice your ratings lol) they were clearly no where near the smarts and quality of this film, which I think is doing this team a major disservice... From reading the reviews so far(including Steel's), all I can think of is that a fair few of the audience missed the biggest element of the film... I mean it was called PlayBACK(wards) right? Did everyone seriously miss that..? that's frickin brilliant - really want to watch it again... So nice to see a film that requires you to think for a change! Congrats guys!

Ambitious, professional, and ultimately provocative, PLAYBACK challenges our notions of conventional narrative and yet still provides satisfying closure as the story comes full circle. Maybe the best way to describe the thoughtful, MEMENTO-style storytelling - supported by atmospheric direction and strong performances by the leads - is "Nolanesque."

well shot with good production. Unfortunately the narrative was convoluted and hard to discern. I felt that it was a little too long.

Way to be ambitious, take a risk and get a great result. Provocative and polished, love the name 'Playback' or was that 'Payback'...? Saw that red 'L'...hmm. Subtleties like the latter that make this the thinking person's film, nice to see in this competition. Priest was great, understated. Music...again, set the scene, love the tunes - great song to end. Want to see this again as I'm sure there is a lot more to pick up. Two thumbs up.

it was cool not having a 100% found footage film. looked really nice too. i didn't like the plot though, it was too hard to follow so I couldn't tell you what it was about - i'd like to see it again though

Kudos for mixing 'found footage' into several meanings. Maybe it's because a day or so has passed since I saw 'Playback', but I'm a bit hazy about how the plot connected together. I feel my confusion is probably because the film essentially layers two flash-backs into each other. In the end though, most loose ends are tied up, and it felt like you were watching a team that did well with this tough 'genre'.

Two words to describe this film.. over complex.. at least for 48hours.. This was a heavy hard to follow talky and some more talky with rewinds in the middle flick.. too much to digest.. I how ever really liked how the found footage was laid out and there was some serious story going on with some slick production values.. but.. it was too much to digest and gave me a stomach ulcer from all that talking digested..

Beautifully shot and acted but undone by a confusing script.

I'm rating this an 8/10 purely for dividing the critics and for looking/playing like an actual film! I admit to being confused at certain points and I'm still trying to work out some aspects of it (would of been great if it could have played twice!). But considering the other films that played after this, I think the "film" aspect of the competition gets lost on alot of teams (couch kumaras the exception!!) - Its not the 48hrs video competition after all... Did over hear someone, I assume from that team, say its like Memento and it's ordered in reverse. Did make me think about it again. Think it just went over alot of heads...

To me, this is what 48Hours is all about, or should be. Here we have an intriguing story of vengeance told in reverse - major points for the nonlinear approach! Everything about this short was professional - it definitely deserves to be seen again!

Come on, Wellington - and NZ! Let's see more films like this one: top-flight production values and music combined with a compelling and, let's face it, disturbing story. I really liked how this team managed to create a sense of scale in such a brief format. Nice work, guys!

Liked this film a lot and would love to see it again. It might have gone over the heads of some audience members at the time, but A+ for taking a risk and shooting in this way. Prety slick story if you follow it. Heats are so rapid fire you may have needed a few beats to get the full gist. Strong effort. Obviously this team has something to offer. Good luck Cinetrance..

The camera quality was fantastic, and clearly a lot of thought went into the story, but I agree with hoccusfoccus. This film was simply too complex and overambitious for V48, and left me confused.
