The Somnambulist

A Horror film about a girl and a doll and a room. Audio: 3/5 Video: 3/5 Story: 2/5 Acting: 2/5 Pros: Horror is a difficult genre, all my sympathies go to people who get it, because it's so hard to pull it off. This film was pretty good considering. The choppy style of the edit and the lack of narrative really helped it a lot as a horror film. Cons: It was a bit confusing, but I think that's OK. I can't really give it more marks for the script. Montage films are quite choppy by nature, but you have to be careful to still get your main points across. Overall: A good effort. They did well within the genre. I feel sorry for the person that had to pin all those paper sheets to the wall, which gave me a bit of a giggle.

This one I loved. From start to end, I felt uncomfortably scared! A very simple set, the inference that it was a padded cell, worked well for a movie that had only 7 minutes to get its point across. The doll was a piece of cinema magic. And the bird sound effects were a masterstroke. Awesome.

Awesome film, stunning cinematography, directing, editing, writing, everything was top notch and you could tell the group put a lot of effort into it. The introduction really got me on the edge of my seat and the insect and bird sounds created a very horrific atmosphere. Very enjoyable from start to finish. Acting: 5/5 Story: 4.5/5 Editing: 5/5 Overall: 10/10

Horror with good use of sound and visuals but didn't get any real story progression, Vic in padded room, lots of great horror type shots and sounds but didn't really get the story sorry. who was the guy? Story seemed to be lacking on an otherwise good effort

It's hard to fault this film without faulting the genre of horror itself, which is fast becoming a tired cliche in the world of 48 hours. Seldom do horror films make the finals, yet they do offer film-makers a chance to flex their more experimental talents, which is what this team did. With exquisite sound design, and the best low-budget (the cost of a ream of printer paper) asylum set I've seen in quite some time, The Somnambulist takes an atmospheric journey through the nature of insomnia and insanity. Also slenderman shows up.

Ok so I'm not a big fan of the horror genre I have to admit, but this was ver y neat visually. Nice cinematography and well put together. Somnambulist means sleepwalker apparently. The images were strong and it was quite disturbing. It was more of a visual feast though and perhaps a bit lacking in story.

I thought the story was actually quite clear, in the first bit the man drugs Vic and then he kills her and the white room scene is her dreams as she's dying. Great editing, camera and SOUND! Really great work from a young (student?) film.

Very well shot, good acting and amazing use of sound effects. Loved the makeshift set - though they were lucky they shot it so well because in the hands of a bad DOP or on a bad camera it would have come across as cheap instead of clever. Story was minimalist, and not really in the good way. I look forward to seeing these people with a genre they are more comfortable telling a story in.

Audio: 3/5 Video: 4/5 Story: 1/5 Acting: 3/5 Pros: The way this was shot felt cinematic (awesome) loved the no face guy and the white paper room, cred to the director and the D.O.P Cons: there was no story, none at all, why was the girl in the room? what was the no face guy doing in the room apart from looking scary it was just confusing? Arthouse... Overall: It looked amazing but I feel you need some sort of story to engage the viewer...

However, I couldn't figure out a story anywhere in the film, it felt much more like a segment of a film rather than a film in it's own right.

Loved this film...not easy to put together a horror film and this really did the job to perfection. Production was great, some awesome editing and I thought the acting was extremely good...excellent work and from a school team! Well done!
