This was a perfect balance of creepy and funny. I'll never hear the phrase "but wait, there's more!" quite the same way again.

This film is one of those concepts that seems to do very well in the 48hours. It has a quirkiness to it that makes it memorable, I immediately remembered it from the heat when I switched it on. I would think that if anything held it back it would be the energy level and overall polish of the film.

Truth Lies Beneath

This is one of those films that is technically very impressive, you generally wouldn't think to do a period piece for the 48 because of what it would involve but they pulled it off. Performances were also very solid, I just didn't feel that the story was on the same level as the rest of the short.

So you know a few weeks ago how I said Couch Kumara had raised the bar for gore in this competition? Well honestly Hot Lunch quite probably have their number with an absolutely staggering tale of guts and destruction that would leave the French extreme horror movement of the early to mid 2000s proud. We're talking FRONTIER(S) style carcasses and BRAINDEAD inspired blood and guts that was jaw droppingly well done.

But you know what? They bloody well earned their explosive payoff, with a likeable ensemble riffing on topical trends such as the housing market and crypto and all centered around a good old fashioned getaway to Gizzy with the lads (a week is plenty of time to get back to the pregnant missus) where things go horribly awry.

Those weekend hall passes quickly led to an eery feeling of dread and good old fashioned ball tripping over tuatara cocktails that cigars would not be getting smoked to celebrate a newborn anytime soon.

Technically superb with pacing, edit, script performances and direction all really well handled. The sound was loud, in your face, brash and completely appropriate for the bravado exploding on screen.

What I personally loved here was the ode to THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME. That subgenre (WALK THE DARK STREET, CONFESSIONS OF A PSYCHO CAT, THE HUNT et all) might just be my favourite subgenre in all of cinema, the human hunt.

Fuckbois getting their comeuppance, what is there not to like?

But genuinely, I loved this film. Massive congrats on the Gisborne victory and fingers crossed you make the national final to blow everyone away at the Embassy.

Silver Spoon

Silver Spoon is a simple straightforward morality tale about a son who takes life and its challenges for granted. The presentation is a little rough around the edges but if some of the shots were thought out better in terms of how one shot cuts to another it would have come together much better.

Loose End

If I know good cinema....and my mother says I do....then I'd say this is the best film I've ever seen in my life.

I believe we should all adopt their red string philosophy in our own world. It would make for a more just and simpler lifestyle. All we need are some ethics, values, and a higher power that we can all agree on. Seems so simple.

Nice job Great Lakes Film Society....and good luck with the Finals!

We Scream

HUGE CONGRATULATIONS Evil Cutlery on the best school team winner for Wellington.

We Scream is absolutely, absurdly hilarious. Paced perfectly and landed every single joke - the response from the crowd in the heats was evidence of this, and the team should also feel super proud of their tight edit, great camerawork and fantastic performances from the cast. The comic timing of We Scream out paced the comedy in most adult entries and I can't wait to see what's next from these rangatahi! So, so proud of you all!
